Assessment Description
Students are required to submit weekly journal entries throughout the course. These reflective narratives help students identify important learning events that happen throughout the course and the practicum. In each week’s entry, students should reflect on the personal knowledge and skills gained.
Write a reflection journal (250-300 words) to outline what has been discovered about your professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses, and additional resources that could be introduced in a given situation to influence optimal outcomes. Each week there will be a specific focus to use in your reflection. Integrate leadership and inquiry into the current practice. Please make sure to address all areas in your writing.

This week’s practicum experience was educative and informative. The practicum experience focused on health policy. According to USAHS (2021), health policy refers to the goals, decisions, and activities that guide how care is accessed, and administered. During the healthcare practicum, I came across healthcare policies, dictating different aspects of healthcare.
For instance, policies include legal and safety regulations by state. Health policy may also reflect protocols regarding how medicine and care are delivered within the hospitals. According to the University of North Dakota (2022), health policy can be codified at the state or national level and then more specifically applied in a clinical or hospital environment.
Some of the health policies of I learned during the practicum include public health policies, pharmaceutical policies, financing policies, insurance policies, and policies regarding healthcare services. For instance, insurance policy dictates what is covered or not, by specific insurers as well as public insurance options (University of North Dakota, 2022).
Health policy has a major impact on health and well-being. Healthy people 2030 emphasizes keeping people safe and healthy through policies and laws at the federal, territorial, state, and local levels. Evidence-based health policies can help prevent disease and promote health (OASH, n.d.). My strength during the practicum is that I was eager to learn and gain skills throughout the week.
An area of improvement is that I need to read in detail and understand most of the policies. Training and reading materials are powerful resources for healthcare providers to enhance their knowledge and skills related to health policy.
